Job Summary
The Operating Engineer - Critical Environments focuses on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment across all systems. The role requires technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations) and multi‑skill proficiency in others.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance for all building systems to ensure 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC, CRAH, plumbing, controls, electrical backup systems, generators, switchgear, power distribution, and transformers.
- Monitor and adjust refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning, boilers, ventilating and water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical/electrical equipment.
- Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation.
- Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms and alerts promptly.
- Analyze system operations, identify problems, and take corrective action.
- Comply with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
- Understand the data center site to manage incidents and events that risk critical systems.
- Manage work orders, including CMMS, vendor management, and customer‑facing tickets.
- Follow emergency escalation procedures.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Minimum Experience
- Preferred: hands‑on experience in a data center/critical facility, including UPS systems, emergency generators, and switchgear.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- 2+ years related work experience.
- Working knowledge of Word and Excel.
Language Skills
- Verbal and written communication.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, regulations, and codes.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before small groups.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
- Professional interaction with tenants and contractors.

Physical Requirements
- Walking large, campus‑like settings.
- Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead.
- Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Climb stairs and navigate rooftops to access equipment.
- Use ladders up to 30 ft and work from heights.
- Climb a ladder with a 300‑lb weight limit.
- Work different schedules, holidays, and respond to site emergencies.
