About The Team
Walmart’s success is built on delivering exceptional value through high‑quality private brand products. Our Quality team ensures that every item placed on the shelf or shipped to a customer's doorstep is safe, legally compliant, durable, and built to the highest standards. We are in a pivotal growth phase, building Walmart’s most trusted, resilient, and technologically advanced quality network. We do this through clear quality standards, proactive defect prevention, simpler operating structures, and a high‑trust culture where data‑driven decisions move fast.
About The Role
This is a senior people‑leadership role with strategic and operational accountability for product quality, factory technical capability, and regulatory compliance across the Hardlines portfolio. You will govern supplier quality management systems, establish robust technical specifications and testing protocols, and spearhead root‑cause resolution for customer returns and quality defects. Partnering with senior cross‑functional leaders in the U.S., Canada, and other international retail markets, you will turn design briefs into safe, reliable, and production‑ready merchandise.
What You’ll Do
- Quality Strategy & Technical Governance
- Develop and execute multi‑year quality assurance and engineering strategies for the Hardlines category, embedding "quality by design" into early product development stages.
- Establish comprehensive product specifications, golden/sealed sample approval workflows, inspection protocols, and performance benchmarks prior to mass production.
- Ensure all category products strictly comply with Walmart quality policies, international safety standards, and local/national legal regulations across all destination retail markets.
- Supplier Capability & Factory Performance
- Lead supplier qualification, technical capability assessments, and pre‑production factory audits across Asia and global sourcing hubs.
- Drive proactive factory development and corrective action plans (CAP) to systematically eliminate systemic manufacturing defects and build long‑term vendor self‑inspection capabilities.
- Partner closely with third‑party testing laboratories, audit bodies, and inspection partners to standardize testing rigor and streamline certification cycles.
- Issue Resolution, Analytics & Continuous Improvement
- Lead customer return rate (CRR) and customer review/complaint analyses to proactively identify quality trends, safety hazards, and field failures.
- Drive rigorous Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA) utilizing structured engineering methodologies (8D, 5 Whys, FMEA) to prevent defect recurrence.
- Deliver concise executive management reporting and technical briefings for senior merchandising, sourcing, and retail leadership.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Product Launch Execution
- Act as the lead technical authority partnering with Sourcing, Merchandising, Product Development, and Packaging during buying brief evaluations and pre‑production milestones.
- Define standardized operating procedures (SOPs) and testing protocols with destination‑country technical counterparts to accelerate new product introductions (NPI).
- Integrate sustainability and circularity initiatives into material selections, manufacturing methods, and packaging integrity standards.
- Team Leadership & Digital Transformation
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of merchandise quality engineers and technical specialists, fostering technical depth and high‑performance accountability.
- Champion the adoption of digital quality dashboards, automated reporting, and AI‑assisted inspection and data tools to accelerate decision‑making and defect predictability.
- Modernize quality reporting through real‑time factory analytics to shorten release lead times and optimize total cost of quality.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Materials), Quality Management, Physical Sciences, or a related technical discipline. A Master’s degree or relevant quality certifications (CQE, Six Sigma Black Belt) is an advantage.
- 10+ years of progressive technical experience in quality engineering, quality assurance, factory auditing, or product testing within hardlines retail, global trading offices, OEM/ODM manufacturing, or third‑party testing laboratories.
- In‑depth engineering knowledge of hardlines categories and their underlying manufacturing processes (plastic injection molding, metal stamping/welding, wood fabrication, coating, assembly).
- Deep expertise in international product safety and regulatory frameworks across major retail markets (U.S., Canada, EU, Latin America), including ASTM, CPSC/CPSIA, FDA food contact, Prop 65, and UL/ETL standards.
- Proven track record leading root cause analysis, statistical process control (SPC), CAPA systems, and supplier quality development.
- Demonstrated experience managing, coaching, and developing engineering teams in a multi‑country, matrixed organizational setting.
- Executive‑level communication, negotiation, and cross‑cultural stakeholder management skills.
- Professional fluency in spoken and written English; proficiency in an additional Asian language is a plus.
- Willingness to travel regionally to manufacturing facilities and testing labs as required.
